The Rottensteiner family is one of the oldest winemaking families in the province of Bolzano. The archaic roots of the family are also demonstrated by the surname itself, which derives from the red color of the porphyry soils around Bolzano; in fact, in German “Stein” means stone, while “Rot” means red.

The History
The winery was founded in 1956, with an emphasis on selling bulk wine in Switzerland under the leadership of grandfather Hans. In the 1980s, with Toni’s entry, the focus shifted to the production of bottled wines. In 2001, Hannes, Toni’s son, joined the winery. Since the beginning, the winery has not only vinified the grapes from its ten hectares of vineyards, but also collaborated with around fifty local farmers. This tradition is now fundamental to the quality of the wine.
Terroir & Winery
The vineyards are located on red porphyritic soil, which gives a marked salinity to the wines. the climate instead emphasizes the aromatic hints in the grapes. The small size of the vineyards located mainly on slopes requires only manual processing as has always been the case, and their management is sustainable in each of the winery’s five farms. In the winery, tradition and innovation come together: large fifty-year-old oak barrels sit alongside steel tanks and barriques. Great work has been done to enhance individual varieties and individual vineyards.
