Croci

The Croci family winery, today led by the brothers Massimiliano and Giuseppe, is located on the Monterosso hill, in Castell’Arquato, in the province of Piacenza; here the family has remained faithful to their peasant attitudes, producing traditional wines in a natural way, especially the sparkling ones refermented in the bottle, whose great value is slowly being rediscovered today.

The products of Croci

The History

The history of the winery began in the early twentieth century, when the grandfather grew and sold grapes to taverns and private individuals, as well as having a stable and fodder for the livestock; Ermano, the last of the nine children, was the one who carried on the farm and began producing bulk wine for sale; in the 1980s, encouraged by his wife Silvana, he bottled the first label which soon entered the bars and taverns of the area. The success of the bottles allowed the vineyard area to grow while the stable was abandoned; Ermano has always followed the Emilian tradition of natural refermentation in the bottle, without abandoning it even when the market began to ask for wines made in autoclave. His sons Massimiliano and Giuseppe mark the continuity of this tradition today.

Terroir & Winery

Massimiliano and Giuseppe work the land in a natural way, as has always been handed down to them, and make wine in a simple way, with spontaneous fermentations and without external additives, according to the best tradition of the Piacenza hills; their sparkling wines acquire their effervescence through traditional artisanal winemaking, what is now called the “ancestral method”: the wines are bottled still but with a natural residual sugar; when the winery heats up the indigenous yeasts activate a spontaneous refermentation in the bottle; after having transformed the residual sugars into carbon dioxide and thus having exhausted their nutrients, the yeasts settle to the bottom.
