The History
Castellare di Castellina, in the heart of Chianti Classico, is a 90-hectare winery founded in 1968 from the merger of five farms. Paolo Panerai acquired it in 1980, transforming it into one of the most established companies in Chianti Classico. A meticulous census of the vines, undertaken immediately after the purchase, made it possible to select the best species of Sangiovese and Malvasia nera, which strongly characterize the winery’s wines; one above all “I Sodi di S. Niccolò”, the flagship wine of Castellare.
Terroir & Winery
The vineyard area extends over 33 hectares of land, embracing the hills of a natural amphitheater facing south-east and with an average altitude of 370m. The vines vary in age from 10 to over 50 years and the yields are very low. Thanks to excellent exposure to the sun, effective water drainage and a mixed soil of calcareous marl, marl and clay, the wines acquire great structure and intensity and prove, both white and red, suitable for long aging in the bottle .
