When Donatella Cinelli Colombini left her family’s farm to found her own winery in 1998, she phoned the Siena oenology school asking for a recommendation for a good student to hire and they told her no because they had to book him years in advance; they proposed a “female wine technician” as an alternative… this is how the first Italian winery with an entirely female staff was born.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Casato a Montalcino was used by Donatella’s maternal family for hunting and as a place for honeymoons. In 1998, Donatella Cinelli Colombini founded a new winery, giving it her name and unifying the Casato in Montalcino and the Fattoria del Colle in Trequanda. The Casato was then renamed “Casato Prime Donne” and hosts a winery that produces Brunello, with a team made up exclusively of women.
Donatella launched the “Brunello original style” project to bring wine back to its roots, taking inspiration from the qualities she had discovered in the wines of her grandfather Giovanni Colombini. This project, started in 2011, embraces craftsmanship and ancient traditions, including the use of bare concrete vats for winemaking, to create elegant, vertical, fresh and long-lasting wines with a strong territorial imprint.
