A pioneering winery in Champagne and in the wine world in general, Lecrerc Briant began the practice of biodynamic agriculture starting in 1964, when Pascal Lecrerc took the reins of the winery, making it the largest biodynamic winery in Champagne.
The Leclerc Briant winery dates back to 1872, when Lucien Leclerc began producing wine in Cùmieres. In 1955, with Louis Bertrand Leclerc, it became Maison and the surname of his wife Jacqueline Briant was added. Having moved the winery to Epernay, his son Pascal undertook the biodynamic revolution on the thirty hectares of the estate, leading it to become a leader in the production of certified biodynamic champagne. After Pascal’s untimely death, the Maison was downsized to its current seven hectares and acquired in 2012 by American enthusiasts who maintain his style and personality.
Each phase of winemaking at Leclerc Briant, from pressing the grapes to disgorging the champagne, is natural and non-traumatic. After at least nine months of barrel aging, with little or no dosage, the wines enjoy a long period of aging in the magnificent kilometre-long cellars dug 35 meters underground.
