The History
In 1894, Domizio Cavazza, principal of the Royal Enological School of Alba and resident of Barbaresco, founded the “Cantine Sociali di Barbaresco” to produce quality wines with local Nebbiolo, bringing together nine producers. It was the unofficial beginning of Barbaresco wine, which marked the recognition of the unique characteristics that the Nebbiolo grown in these lands had. The winery closed in the 1920s, but in 1958, Don Fiorino Marengo, then parish priest of Barbaresco, brought together nineteen farmers and founded Produttori del Barbaresco, «for the qualification and guarantee of Barbaresco».
Terroir & Winery
In the Barbaresco area, Nebbiolo is grown between 200 and 400 meters above sea level. The soil is clayey, rich in limestone. The different percentage of calcium and some more or less extensive veins of sand give each slope peculiar characteristics, which are then reflected in the wines produced. The area of origin of Barbaresco is small: four municipalities, Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso, San Rocco for the production of Nebbiolo, accompanied by Dolcetto and Barbera.
