The History
The Coutier family has been present and producing Champagne in Ambonnay since 1800. Owner of some of the best plots in the area, Renè Coutier produces around thirty thousand magnificent bottles annually. His father was the first to plant Chardonnay in Ambonnay back in 1946. Nathalie and René have managed the estate since 1981 and were joined in 2014 by their son Antoine who is the fifth generation to produce R.H. Coutier Champagne.
Terroir & Winery
Ambonnay is one of the 17 villages classified 100% Grand Cru. Also called “Le Grand Noir” due to the almost total presence of Pinot Noire and the great personality of the black grapes themselves. It is located in the south-eastern part of the Reims Mountain, which means that the vineyards are sheltered by the mountain from the cold Atlantic winds. Its slopes are exposed to the South and South-East, and the terrain is mainly made up of limestone soils. Structured, mineral wines, where Pinot Noir manifests itself in one of its greatest expressions.
