With its foundation date of 1 September 1729, Ruinart is by far the oldest Champagne house. Inspired by the Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart, it was his nephew Nicolas who officially founded it.
On September 1, 1729, Nicolas Ruinart, a textile merchant in Reims like his father, opened his first accounting register dedicated to the “vin de bulles”. The initial intuition came from his uncle Thierry Ruinart (1657-1709), a Benedictine monk who had shown him the path to follow, and inspired the creation of an initiative that would make history in the world of wine. Since 1768 the maison has permanently moved its headquarters from Epernay to Reims. Today it is part of the LVMH group.
Chardonnay is the protagonist, the central element in the life of the Maison, the common thread of all its Champagnes. It animates all the cuvées, giving life to that intensity and freshness characteristic of the Ruinart house. Since 1768 Ruinart has acquired ancient chalk quarries from the Gallo-Roman era dug under the city of Reims up to 38 meters deep (eight kilometers of route on three levels); a huge natural winery.
