The History
In 89 BC the “Mamertine” mercenaries landed on the island and conquered Messina; having settled in the territory, they planted grapes which were then called Nocera. Messina was then annexed by the Romans, and the vine became an esteemed heritage of the Empire, so much so that in the De Bello Gallico it is told how Julius Caesar celebrated his third consulate with the “Mamertinum”. In 2004 the DOP Mamertino was born and Tenuta Gatti became the bearer of its ancient tradition.
