Tenuta Masseto is located in an area protected by the hills of Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast close to the sea. Around the vineyard, a lush variety of wild plants develops, maritime pines, ancient olive trees and the typical wild Tuscan vegetation, made up of shrubs and bushes.
In 1981, the Marquis Lodovico Antinori founded the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci. In the same year, the Russian-American oenologist André Tchelistcheff, known for his prominent role in Californian viticulture, identified Bolgheri as an ideal place for the cultivation of Merlot and together with Luigi Veronelli, contributed to promoting the entire area. In 1986, the first “Merlot” label was produced by Tenuta Masseto, with around 800 bottles. Already from the following harvest the wine was called Masseto from the name of the stony hill that hosts the vineyard. Since 2014, ownership has passed to the Frescobaldi family.
The Tenuta Masseto vineyard is divided into three sub-areas with distinct terroir characteristics: Alto, Centrale and Junior. Furthermore, each area contains several plots with unique characteristics, creating a complex mosaic that offers various shades of the same territory. The creation of Masseto occurs through the assembly of three wines coming from three different parcels, each with its own distinctive personality.
