Tenuta San Guido stands for Sassicaia, the winery’s first wine and a legendary name in the world of wine, recognized as one of the best red wines in the world.
In the 1940s Mario Incisa della Rocchetta embraced the dream of producing a Bordeaux style wine, aged in barrique like French wines. He plants Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines, recognizing a similarity between Bolgheri and the Graves territory in Bordeaux. In 1948, he produced the first vintage of Sassicaia for friends and relatives, so called because of the stony and gravelly soil. However, the wine has only been marketed since 1968, when the collaboration between the marquis and the winemaker Giacomo Tachis began. The estate has been managed since 1983 by Mario’s son, Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta thanks to whom Sassicaia became famous throughout the world.
The vineyards are located at altitudes between 60 and 400m above sea level, exposed to the West and South-West. The soils, partially clayey, have different characteristics depending on the position, with many limestone areas rich in alberese, gabbro and stones. The embrace of hills that extends from Bibbona to Castagneto protects the vineyards and olive groves from north-eastern winds, while in summer this corridor is refreshed by sea breezes.
